The Gulf’s Jewel Box: Sanibel, Shelling Capital of the World

While staying at our Bay Pointe vacation rentals, you are just a 30-mile scenic drive away from a true bucket-list destination: Sanibel Island. Famed globally as the "Shelling Capital of the World," this unique barrier island is geographically blessed. Unlike most islands that run north-to-south, Sanibel runs east-to-west, acting as a giant "scoop" that catches millions of seashells traveling across the Gulf of Mexico.

The seashell diversity here is unmatched. On a single walk, you can find:

Conchs and Whelks: Large, sturdy, and beautiful spirals.

Coquinas: Tiny, colorful shells that look like butterfly wings.

The Junonia: The "Holy Grail" of shelling.

Visit any beach on the island—from Bowman’s Beach to the Sanibel Lighthouse—and you’ll see people of all ages performing the "Sanibel Stoop." This is the local term for the hunched-over posture of dedicated shell hunters searching for the perfect specimen.

For the ultimate experience, visit the Bailey-Matthews National Shell Museum to learn about the incredible creatures that create these natural treasures before you head out to the sand.
