Wade Into the Wild: Experience a "Wet Walk" in Fort Myers

Looking to trade the typical vacation routine for a true Florida adventure? Just a short drive from North Fort Myers at the Six Mile Cypress Slough Preserve, you can step off the boardwalk and trek directly into the heart of a lush, water-filled cypress swamp on a guided "Wet Walk."

While most visitors view the 3,500-acre wetland ecosystem from the safety of the dry boardwalk, these special seasonal excursions invite adventurous guests to wade right into knee- to chest-deep rainwater. Led by expert naturalists, you’ll journey off-trail through towering cypress domes, dense fern gardens, and tranquil aquatic habitats. It’s a peaceful, hands-on way to spot wild orchids, native frogs, and unique birdlife up close.

Essential Tips for Your Wet Walk Adventure:

  • When to Go: Wet Walks run seasonally during the late summer and fall rainy season—typically August through October—when water levels in the slough are at their peak.

  • What to Wear: You will get wet! Lace-up sneakers (no Crocs, sandals, or flip-flops) and long pants are mandatory to protect your feet and legs against submerged roots and cypress knees.

  • Specialty Walks: The preserve offers themed treks throughout the season, including Photographer Wet Walks, Mindfulness/Meditation Wet Walks, and night-themed tours.

  • Book Early: Because groups are kept small to preserve the delicate ecosystem, tickets fill up fast—advance registration online via the Friends of Six Mile Cypress Slough Preserve is required.
